PLANT, John (1819-1894)
CL Leicester Permanent Library 1844; 1CL Salford 1849-1892
He came to SALFORD from Leicester, where he had been 'Librarian, News room attendant and Secretary to the Library Committee and News Room Committee', to administer the museum and associated library established under the Museums Act 1845. Thanks largely to the benevolence of E R Langworthy, a local worthy, he was able to build up what was, for the time, a large book stock, to open branches and to develop the museum; he was frequently asked to advise newer authorities. He was able to make much less progress, however, during his later years of office, due to inadequate funding.
